Choosing Your Maternity Session Outfits

Your Maternity session is something special. I love each time I meet new parents-to-be and those parents with older children who are eagerly awaiting their newest family addition! There is something so beautiful about new life... the new life of the baby inside and the new life of parents and siblings. Everything changes when another little person enters the scene! While we can anticipate and dream of all the joys to come when he or she is born, we must be sure to celebrate the here and now. Part of that celebration often means a Maternity Photo Session!

Maternity Sessions are normally booked between weeks 26-34 of your pregnancy! This timeframe can allow your baby bump to grow and not leave us too close to delivery. Of course, there is nothing else going on in your life during pregnancy..... LOL... so sometimes your Maternity Session outfits can get put on the back burner! If this is you, I'm here to tell you it's ok. There are so many beautiful options out there, and I've come up with a few main points to remember when you are selecting your outfits for this photo session that will soon be a sweet memory.

Choosing Your Maternity Session Outfits

  1. Stick to the color palette that is you: If you know you look amazing in neutral tones, go with it! With so many other changes happening in your life and in your body, sticking with your tried-and-true color palette is one way to make you feel more comfortable and beautiful! Dark colors like black or navy blue have a tendency to hide your baby bump, so I suggest sticking to your go-to lighter toned dresses for the mommas.
  2. Choose outfits based off your photoshoot location: While I love a silky, fancy gown... it might not fit the scene of a park or field (or it might be perfect!) Working with your photographer to choose your session location can set the tone for the images in your gallery and help you narrow down the style of outfits that would be best for your session.
  3. Patterns: Yes or no? I recommend solid colors or subtle patterns! No big checkered patterns or thick stripes. Choosing a dress with a solid color and fun texture is a great way to add interest!
  4. For the Gents: Depending on the session vibe, I recommend khaki pants or your best jeans with a button down! Lots of the dads wear boots or dress shoes to match the style of their wife. Less is more when it comes to the guys- going for classic and crisp looks!
